Coming home to a place he'd never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door”
John Denver/Mike Taylor– Rocky Mountain High
John Denver knew what he was talking about. Reading, hearing these words – they mean so much to me now. I am not lucky enough to live in the Colorado Rockies, but I am lucky enough to have hiked up from the coastal plains and make a home among the foothills of the Appalachians. And I will tell you this…the mountains change you. Even a little elevation can move something inside your soul.
I lived thirty something years as a flat lander and never felt as much at home as I do here on the side of this mountain. Walking these hills, through these trees, I am at peace. And even so, while I love it here, living on this mountain makes me only want to move higher and higher into the wild. To detach more and more, to face nature closer and wilder, to seek grace with every step, to escape the trappings of man in the ridges northward.
My little piece of heaven on a mountainside….John Denver had it right. No matter the mountain, you’ll come home to a place to you’ve never been before.
